West Oxfordshire District Council is encouraging residents to put their real Christmas trees out for recycling from Monday 18 January.
Householders simply need to put their Christmas tree – and any other greenery such as holly, ivy and wreaths – in their garden waste bin or leave it at the kerbside alongside their food waste bins and recycling boxes on their green collection day.
Cllr David Harvey, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “Last January we collected over 440 tonnes of garden waste for recycling. All residents have the opportunity to have their tree collected from right outside their home. Not only is this convenient for them but it will help to ensure that more trees are recycled.
“If your tree is larger than 4 feet, please cut it up into manageable pieces before putting it out to help the collection crews.”
Residents do not need to be signed up for the Council's optional garden waste service to put out their Christmas tree for collection but are asked to remove all decorations and wire from their trees before putting them out.
Garden waste collections are suspended from 25 December until the week commencing 18 January to enable bin crews to concentrate on picking up all the excess waste and recycling generated during the busy festive period. Bin collections will be operating on a Bank Holiday schedule, which can be checked on the Council’s website.
All waste and recycling services are due to return to the normal schedule from 18 January.
