WODC - Get ready for the European Election on 23 May

26/4/2019

Unless the UK leaves the EU before, elections are scheduled to take place for the European Parliament on 23 May 2019.

West Oxfordshire District Council is part of the South East Region which elects 10 MEPs.
Keith Butler, West Oxfordshire District Council's Local Returning Officer, said: "In order to be able to vote, you must be included on the electoral register - anyone not already registered has until midnight on 7 May to apply.

“UK nationals who are already registered do not need to do so again. However, if you have moved house in the past few months you should check that you are registered at your new address.

Poll cards have been posted to all those already registered to vote in West Oxfordshire. If you have not received one, it could mean you are not on the electoral roll and, are therefore, not able to vote on the 23 May.

Register to vote by 7 May

Apply to register online at www.westoxon.gov.uk/register or contact the Council’s elections team for a paper form.
Citizens of European Union countries (other than the UK, Republic of Ireland, Malta and Cyprus) have been sent a form to complete and return by 7 May to choose to vote in the UK rather than their home country at these elections. They cannot vote in West Oxfordshire unless they return that form.

 Postal and proxy votes

If you can’t make it to the polling station on 23 May, you can choose to vote by post (deadline for completed applications 5pm on Wednesday 8 May) or by proxy vote (deadline for applications 5pm on Wednesday 15 May).

Application forms for postal and proxy votes and registration forms for European Union citizens are available from www.westoxon.gov.uk/register

 Students

Students registered to vote at both their home and term-time addresses must choose one place in which to vote. It is an offence to vote more than once at a national-level election.
Polling stations will be open 7am - 10pm on 23 May. The results will be announced on 26 May.

If you are not sure whether you are on our electoral register, please call 01993 861410 to check. Similarly, if you are registered to vote and have recently moved, please contact the District Council to ensure they have a record of your new address.

Calling all over-55s – a special sporting event is being organised and residents are being urged to help form a team representing West Oxfordshire.

The annual Club Games 2019 event organised by the Council’s leisure provider GLL Better celebrates sport and competition not just for leisure centre members but individuals across the District.
Organisers want to hear from people aged over 55 interested in the following sports:

·       Badminton – mixed pairs
·
Table Tennis – mixed pair
·
Short Tennis – mixed pairs
·
Pickleball – mixed pairs
·
Walking Football
·
Walking Netball

Martin Holland, Leisure Services Manager at West Oxfordshire District Council, said: “This is a fantastic event for people of all abilities who are either regularly taking part in sport or just want to get involved. It’s great fun for everyone.”

Phil Stanley, West Oxfordshire Community Sports Officer at GLL Better, added: “The Club Games are not only a great occasion, they bring individuals together to work as teams. It’s an excellent way of getting fit and making new friends at the same time.”

The event will take place at the Rivermead Leisure Complex in Reading on Friday 17  May. Taking part costs just £4 per person.

Participants will compete against other teams from GLL areas outside London.

For further information and details of how to take part, email [email protected] or contact a member of staff at any West Oxfordshire GLL leisure centre.

How Do Burglars See Your Home?

8/4/2019

With lighter evenings and the daffodils in bloom, now is the time to Spring into Action and review your home security.

The best way of doing this is to look at your property through the eyes of a burglar. Think about how you would break in if you locked yourself out. You may be surprised at how easy it would be.

To get started, simply download your FREE Home Security Guide from the Thames Valley Police website here: https://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/police-forces/thames-valley-police/areas/advice/home-security-guide/

The guide contains lots of hints and tips including:
  • A range of physical and digital security measures to protect your home
  • How to avoid invalidating your home insurance through poor security
  • A handy checklist for when you go away.
Being burgled is a traumatic experience. It’s not just the financial cost of replacing stolen items, but also the emotional impact of feeling violated after a stranger has been in your home.

In this short video, Jennifer and Sam talk about how they were affected after their home was burgled. You can watch the video on the Thames Valley Police YouTube channel here:
https://youtu.be/aY9eBeaQeA0

By working together we can build community resilience to deter burglars from targeting homes in the area.
