Local support for ‘Ask for Angela’

30/1/2019

Fifteen local pubs and eateries in Witney have signed up to a national safety scheme designed to reduce sexual violence and vulnerability.
‘Ask for Angela’ is a phrase that can be used at the participating premises by anyone feeling unsafe or threatened whilst on a date, and it lets someone know that they would like help.
The phrase would be recognised by staff and they would take action by helping that person to leave the venue discreetly and get home, or be taken to a place of safety.
Officers from West Oxfordshire District Council and Thames Valley Police visited the fifteen Witney establishments to promote the initiative; each agreed to join the campaign and will be displaying posters in their toilets.
One of the establishments is Norton’s café bar. Manager Jemma Shields said, “We’re very happy to join this scheme and, even if it only helps one person, it is well worth it.”
Cllr Norman MacRae MBE, Cabinet Member for community safety said, “It’s so important that people have a safety net if they feel uncomfortable, especially today when online dating is so popular and people often meet in public places for the first time.
“I’m delighted that fifteen places in Witney are joining the ‘Ask for Angela’ campaign and our ambition is to implement the scheme across West Oxfordshire.”
The Ask for Angela initiative was originally launched by Lincolnshire County Council, but is now nationwide.

WODC - Sign up now for garden waste collections

17/1/2019

Letters are being sent to householders in West Oxfordshire encouraging them to sign up, or to renew their subscription, for the garden waste collection service.

The new subscription year starts from 1 April 2019 to 31 March 2020 and costs £30 per bin a year for a fortnightly wheeled-bin collection.

Residents signing up before the end of February will have their licence in time for when the new subscription year starts, and can be sure of not missing any collections from April.

Cllr Steve Good, Cabinet Member for Environment said, “The garden waste collection subscription service is extremely popular and currently more than 27,000 properties are signed up. The price remains the same as last year and at £30, we believe this continues to be extremely good value.”

Signing up for garden waste collections is quick and easy, and can be done using a credit or debit card, either by calling 01993 861025 or online at www.westoxon.gov.uk/garden.

Homeseekers urged to keep their details updated

13/1/2019

Westo Oxfordshire District Council - News Release
Residents who are registered with the Homeseeker Plus housing service are being reminded to keep their details updated in a bid to ensure their needs are met.
The service, which is operated by West Oxfordshire District Council, aims to match applicants with the property best suited to their needs.

But if their circumstances change, they need to update their details to ensure they are matched with the most appropriate property.

Cllr Steve Good, Cabinet Member for Housing Management, said: “Over time people’s circumstances change – they may have more children or family members may move out so it is important that we know exactly what their needs are.

“That way we can match the right homes with the right people to ensure the fairest use of the housing stock available in the District.”

Courier Fraud - TVP Alert

13/1/2019

This scam is occurring daily and people are being scammed out of thousands of pounds.

COURIER FRAUD

**Please make sure your elderly or vulnerable relatives and neighbours are aware of this scam**

Fraudsters are contacting victims by telephone and purporting to be a police officer or bank official. To substantiate this claim, the caller might be able to confirm some easily obtainable basic details about the victim such as their full name and address. They may also offer a telephone number for the victim to call to check that they are genuine; this number is not genuine and simply redirects to the fraudster who pretends to be a different person. After some trust has been established, the fraudster will then, for example, suggest;

- Some money has been removed from a victim’s bank account and staff at their local bank branch are responsible.
- Suspects have already been arrested but the “police” need money for evidence.
- A business such as a jewellers or currency exchange is operating fraudulently and they require assistance to help secure evidence.

Victims are then asked to cooperate in an investigation by attending their bank and withdrawing money, withdrawing foreign currency from an exchange or purchasing an expensive item to hand over to a courier for examination who will also be a fraudster. Again, to reassure the victim, a safe word might be communicated to the victim so the courier appears genuine.

At the time of handover, unsuspecting victims are promised the money they’ve handed over or spent will be reimbursed but in reality there is no further contact and the money is never seen again.

Protect Yourself... Your bank or the police will never:
- Phone and ask you for your PIN or full banking password.
- Ask you to withdraw money to hand over to them for safe-keeping, or send someone to your home to collect cash, PIN, cards or cheque books if you are a victim of fraud.

Don’t assume an email or phone call is authentic just because someone knows your basic details (such as your name and address or even your mother’s maiden name), it doesn’t mean they are genuine. Be mindful of who you trust – criminals may try and trick you into their confidence by telling you that you’ve been a victim of fraud

Stay in control...
If something feels wrong then it is usually right to question it. Have the confidence to refuse unusual requests for personal or financial information.

TVP Action Alert and Action Fraud

7/1/2019

HM Revenue and Customs Alert

What you need to know
Action Fraud has experienced an increase in the reporting of malicious calls, voicemails, text messages or emails to members of the public purporting to be from HMRC.

The fraudsters state that as a result of their non-payment of tax or other duty, the victim is liable to prosecution or other legal proceedings such as repossession of belongings to settle the balance but can avoid this by arranging for payment to be made immediately by method such as bank transfer or by iTunes gift cards.

If the victim is hesitant or refuses to comply, the suspect makes a threat such as immediate arrest, bailiffs or in cases where the victim appears to be of overseas origin; deportation.

Often, the period for which the tax is allegedly due is distant enough to guarantee the victim will have little, if any, paperwork or ability to verify the claims. Once the money is paid the suspects sever all contact.

It is vital that the public exercise caution when receiving messages or telephone calls of this nature.

What you need to do
Always question unsolicited requests for your personal or financial information. Just because someone knows your basic details (such as your name and contact details), it doesn't mean they are genuine. Instead, contact the company directly using trusted methods such as a known email address or phone number.

Listen to your instincts. If something feels wrong then it is usually right to question it. No genuine organisation will ask you to pay taxes, bills or fees using iTunes Gift Cards, or any other type of voucher.

Don’t be rushed or pressured into making a decision. Under no circumstances would a genuine bank or some other trusted organisation force you to make a financial transaction on the spot.

Report Phishing attempts. If you receive a call, text or email of this nature and have not lost money, report this as a phishing attempt to Action Fraud.
