OCC - Request for Volunteers

28/5/2019

xfordshire County Council in partnership with West Oxfordshire District Council and Oqema Chemicals, are hosting a Reception Centre & Emergency Treatment Centre exercise on Friday 7th June at Carterton Community Centre. For our exercise to be successful, we need people to be our displaced residents from a scenario-based incident in Carterton. You’ll be given a full explanation of the incident in the pre-exercise safety brief at 10.30 in the foyer.

To ensure our exercise remains realistic, we need a diverse group to attend the community centre and act as though they’ve been displaced following the incident. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate pets during this exercise, but we would like to hear from families with children, elderly and all faiths, we are also keen to hear from anyone who would like to be an actor in our Emergency treatment centre (don’t worry it’s not Casualty).

If you are available to attend? please email – emergencyplanning@oxfordshire.gov.uk  and we will be in contact.

WODC Pioneering housing scheme expands into another property

18/5/2019

A project aimed at providing young people with a home and a fresh start in life has been expanded.
The Our House scheme run by West Oxfordshire District Council and Cottsway Housing Association has taken on a second property in Witney and now the search has started to find suitable tenants ahead of it being ready in June.
Applicants need to be under-35 and either looking for work or to improve on their existing job. They need to have a hardworking and conscientious outlook but just require a little help with affording to live in the local area. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to live in a shared house with communal facilities including living room, kitchen and garden. The project also works with an independent work coach who can support candidates by coaching and mentoring them into the career they want, back into education or just with a bit of life direction. This is their journey towards independence and employment but with a helping hand along the way.
Project Co-ordinator Sam Stronach said: “Our first property in Eastfield Road, Witney has been up and running for nine months and we have seen some positive results with our tenants. Two of them are now working and the other is in full-time education.
“We have worked on a broad variety of life-skills that applicants didn’t necessarily have when they moved in including managing a budget, being a good neighbour and confidence building. This has been a real learning curve for all involved. We are pleased with the initial outcomes and we hope to develop the project over the next 12 months.
“The people we are looking for may not have had the best start in life but we can help them to help themselves and build a better future.”
Anyone wishing to be considered for a place in the property should contact Sam on 01993 890000 or email sam.stronach@cottsway.co.uk

WODC - Funding available for community groups

10/5/2019

Community groups across West Oxfordshire could be in line for a £500 cash boost. Applications are being sought for funding from the District Council’s Community Activities Grant with the criteria significantly broadened this year to include not just arts and heritage projects but any type of activity which brings people together.

Organisers are looking for community groups wishing to develop arts, heritage or community-based projects in West Oxfordshire which contribute to the health and wellbeing of residents and quality of community life. A total of £11,000 is available for the 2019 awards with grants ranging between £100 and £500.

Last year a wide range of organisations benefited from funding ranging from the Charlbury Riverside Festival to the Combe Mill Society.
Bampton Classical Opera received £500 which went towards its performance of Nicolo Isouard’s rare opera, Cinderella.
Director Jeremy Gray said: “Our running costs are enormous but we want to keep ticket prices as reasonable as possible so this grant was very welcome.
“There is a strong community involvement with local people helping us with everything from front of house to catering.”
Dr Gray added that another application would be made this year to help with the production of the next rare opera, Bride and Gloom, by Stephen Sorace.
Heather McCulloch, Healthy Communities Manager at West Oxfordshire District Council, said: “We are really pleased to be able to broaden the scheme this year.
“There are so many people organising so much for West Oxfordshire residents and we look forward to hearing from them and doing a little more to support their work.”
For more details and an application form, see  https://www.westoxon.gov.uk/residents/leisure/community-leisure-grants/ or call or call 01993 861080.
The deadline for applications is 12pm on 20 May with applications to be made to the Woodgreen Council offices.

WODC - Search for sporting stars launched

Date:  02 May 2019

Search for sporting stars launched

Organisers of the West Oxfordshire Sports Awards are urging clubs and individuals to highlight their stars for well-deserved recognition. The 2019 Awards have been launched and nominations are being sought for the best coach, club and unsung hero in the District.

The District Council is looking for evidence of outstanding commitment and achievement from individuals as well the overall contribution of clubs to athletes’ success.

Last year’s awards were dominated by the Witney & District Swimming Club which was unveiled as the Club of the Year with Head Coach, Chantal Clavaud, taking the Coach of the Year honour. Chantal said: “I love the sport and have been a swimmer since I was 10 years old. We spend a lot of time together as a team and this award recognised the hours we put in and the time away from home.”  Success has followed the awards with the club picking up the Chiltern League trophy for the first time since 2007. It has also been promoted to Division 1 in the National Arena League for 2019, a position it last occupied in 2003.

Those shortlisted will be invited to the annual Sports Awards evening on Thursday 6 June at the Windrush Leisure Centre in Witney. The Sports Awards are run annually by West Oxfordshire District Council in partnership with the GLL Sport Foundation and recognise the contribution and commitment of individuals and the achievements of clubs.

Martin Holland, Leisure Services Manager at West Oxfordshire District Council, said: “We have some highly successful clubs and individuals in West Oxfordshire and this is a chance for them to be recognised as well as being an opportunity to unearth the next generation of outstanding talent.

“We want to hear from as many people and clubs as possible so we can highlight sporting success across the District and beyond.”

Nomination forms can be downloaded from the website www.westoxon.gov.uk/residents/leisure/sport-fitness/ and should be sent to leisureandcommunities@westoxon.gov.uk  The deadline is Friday 17 May.
