OCC - Connecting Oxford

27/9/2019

Oxfordshire County Council and Oxford City Council have been working together on bold measures to tackle congestion on routes into and around Oxford, particularly the ‘eastern arc’ that links north, east and southern Oxford outside the city centre. The continued growth in journey numbers as new jobs are created in and around the city means that decisive action is needed.

Severe traffic congestion is also having a negative impact on existing bus services including from the rural areas. With bus journey times worsening, operators are having to put more buses on the road to maintain timetables.  This, together with falling passenger numbers is threatening the viability of bus services. If not addressed, this unsustainable trend could see a severe impact on less profitable city and rural services.

Although the actual changes to the transport system are in Oxford we expect the benefits to extend much wider as they will reduce congestion and improve connectivity for journeys into and around the city. In particular, new high frequency bus and Park & Ride services, will connect people living in rural areas and county towns to key employment sites in Oxford, as well as a new fast orbital route across the eastern arc.

We have done quite a bit of work on the proposals and are now looking for input from residents, employers and people who travel into the city before developing a full business case. We have already had some positive engagement with employers in the eastern arc, though we are well aware these proposals are likely to raise some concerns.

We would very much like to hear the views of residents outside the city with an interest in improved transport connections into and around Oxford. The news release on the project is below and you can find out more details about the project and how to register your views here.

BBC South - BBC is holding open auditions across the country to find new voices

23/9/2019

This weekend, the BBC is holding open auditions across the country to find new voices and I think this might be something that would interest your members – please spread the word!

You don’t need any experience, just a great personality and a story to tell.

The auditions will take place at the Kassam Stadium, Oxford from 9.30am – 5pm on Sunday 29th September.

All you need to do is turn up, give us your contact details and then you’ll have 60 seconds to tell us a story, tale or anecdote. We don’t want you to reel off a CV, or list why you’d be great on the radio – just tell us a story that you think we’d love to hear!

The full details are available at bbc.co.uk/newvoices.

WODC - Residents urged to back Recycle Week

22/9/2019

Residents in West Oxfordshire are being urged to get behind this year’s Recycle Week with a series of events and initiatives.

The campaign which runs until 29 September, aims to raise awareness on a national level about the benefits of recycling and this year the campaign is asking everyone living in the UK to take recycling into their own hands to protect the environment.
In West Oxfordshire a special competition will be running all week on the District’s dedicated social media pages. It will ask residents if particular items can be recycled. The winner will win a waste bin with three compartments to help them with their recycling efforts.

Residents will also notice a sticker appearing on their refuse bins encouraging people not to use it for food waste but instead place it in the special container they have been provided with.

Also, residents can sign up for a tour of the Ardley energy from waste plant on Wednesday 25 September. For details see: https://www.oxford.gov.uk/info/20074/recycling/1030/recycling_and_waste_plant_tours

The campaign is delivered by Recycle Now on behalf of the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP).

Latest research from Recycle Now reveals that over 60 per cent of UK households are now recycling more than they were a year ago because of environmental concerns.

In West Oxfordshire almost 60 per cent of rubbish is recycled making the District one of the best performing in the country but there is still room for improvement with the new county-wide waste partnership aiming to boost the rate to 70 per cent by 2030.

Cllr Norman MacRae, Cabinet Member for the Environment at West Oxfordshire District Council, said: “What and how we recycle really matters. Recycling an item rather than throwing it in the general rubbish bin means it will be dealt with in the most environmentally friendly way, keeping materials in use.
“It is down to each and every one of us to take on the responsibility of looking after our planet and recycling is just one way the public can make a difference.”

Anyone unsure about what can be recycled in the district, when their kerbside collection is due or to order a new bin can find out more on the Council’s website:

WODC - Key roles created in battle against climate change

20/9/2019

West Oxfordshire District Council has strengthened its commitment to tackling climate change with the creation of two key positions.

Cllr David Harvey will become Cabinet member for Climate Change while the Cabinet has also recommended that a full-time Climate Change Manager is appointed by the Council.

The move follows the Council officially recognising the climate emergency in June.

Cllr Harvey said: “We need to show ambition and impetus to push the climate change agenda forward.

“We need to establish what the key areas are where we can make a change such as planning provision, electric vehicle charging points and ensuring new homes are built as efficiently as possible.”

Cllr Harvey added that he would be looking to learn from other councils’ experience in the area as well as lobbying for change at national level.

The Cabinet has approved a recommendation for the council to provide £120,000 of funding for the Climate Change Manager position for the next two years.
