Thames Challenge in aid of MIND - call for participants

23/4/2017

The Parish Council has been sent the following information by one of the organisers:

On 20th May in Hyde Park, London, an attempt will be made on a Guinness World Record in aid of MIND and in support of Heads Together - a campaign spearheaded by The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry,.
We aim to have over 200 people run 5km linked together.
They will be representing the parishes along the River Thames - one for every mile.
Needless to say, the pace will be slow and the distance is low - just over 3miles.
So participants don't have to be super-fit, just keen on helping to raise money for a good cause, and enjoying the fame and camaraderie .

County Council Election Thursday 4 May - make sure you have a vote!

1/4/2017

With local elections taking place in just a few weeks, voters in Oxfordshire are being urged to make sure they are registered to vote and are able to take part on polling day, Thursday 4 May.
The call for voters to sign up comes as the Electoral Commission launches a national voter registration campaign to encourage as many people as possible to register ahead of elections taking place this year across the country.
West Oxfordshire District Council is now also reminding voters that they need to register by the deadline of Thursday 13 April otherwise they won’t be able to take part in the Oxfordshire County Council elections.
Keith Butler, Electoral Registration Officer for West Oxfordshire, said: “Time is running out to make sure you can take part in elections this May, so I’d encourage everyone in Oxfordshire to take action now if they’re not already registered to vote. It’s quick and easy to register, but after the deadline of 13 April, it will be too late.
“Poll cards are currently being sent to all those already registered to vote. If you don’t receive one it could mean you’re not on the electoral roll and, are therefore, not able to vote at the May election. If you’ve not received your poll card by 1 April, please give us a call on 01993 861410 to check you’re registered.”
Emma Hartley, Head of Campaigns at the Electoral Commission said: “Our research shows that young people, students and recent home movers are particularly less likely to be registered to vote. So if you have moved house recently, then make sure you’re registered correctly. If you’re not registered, you won’t be able to have your say on issues that directly affect your day-to-day life in Oxfordshire.”
To register to vote, visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote before Thursday 13 April.

Thames Valley Police launches Thames Valley Alert App

1/4/2017

Thames Valley Police is delighted to announce that the Thames Valley Alert App has been launched and is free to download now.
The app, which is available on iPhone and Android, can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play and allows you to receive instant notifications to your phone on the latest policing alerts in your area (please note that you must enable push notifications to receive these).
The app can use GPS data to send you targeted messages according to your current geographical location and messaging preferences, sending you instant notifications to your mobile phone about specific information, warnings and advice relevant to that location.
The app offers a number of other features, including allowing you to quickly locate your closest police station, and also provides a feed of the latest Thames Valley-wide news on Twitter, so you’ll never miss those important Force-wide updates and breaking news. This facility is available on the app even if you do not have a Twitter account.
Please note that you do not have to download the app to get alerts; you can still choose to receive alerts via email, text or voicemail.
To download the app, visit the Apple store or Google Play and search ‘Thames Valley Alert’.

Thames Valley Police & Crime Commissioner launches new five year Police & Crime plan for the Thames Valley

1/4/2017

The Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Anthony Stansfeld, has launched his new five year Police and Crime Plan for the Thames Valley.

The document sets out the priorities for policing and other crime reduction organisations. It consists of five strategic priorities which are:

  • Vulnerability – Managing demand on services through working together with a particular focus on mental health, elder abuse, hidden abuse, and the criminal justice experience for victims
  • Prevention and Early Intervention – Improving safeguarding in both the physical and virtual space including tackling cyber crime, road safety, peer on peer abuse, hate crime and female genital mutilation (FGM)
  • Reducing Re-offending – Targeting and managing harm and risk with a focus on substance misuse, violence involving weapons and offender management
  • Serious Organised Crime and Terrorism – Improving the local response including increased public awareness, promoting a ‘dare to share’ culture, and preventing violent extremism and exploitation of vulnerable people.
  • Police Ethics and Reform – Increasing the pace of change with a focus on improved support for victims, uptake of new technology, and improving the perceptions of police among young people
The Plan was informed by the views of nearly 5000 residents, including over 1000 young people, who took part in the PCCs policing and crime survey in 2016.

It was also developed using a broad range of information including academic research, analysis of crime trends and consultation with partners including the police and local authorities.

Anthony Stansfeld said: “Demand on policing and community safety issues have changed over the last few years and my new plan reflects this. The Plan focuses on many new and emerging issues for policing but crimes such as household burglary and rural crime will also remain a priority.

“Tackling new demand, as well as maintaining support for the investigation of more traditional crimes, won’t be an easy task. However, as recent Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) inspections have shown, Thames Valley Police is a force we can be proud of and I have faith that they will be able to rise to this challenge and continue to safeguard the communities of Thames Valley.

“I will now be working closely with partner organisations to understand how they will address the issues identified.”

PCC website.
