Bigger wheelie bins for keen recyclers

26/10/2018

West Oxfordshire residents wanting to recycle more can now swap to a larger recycling wheelie bin for free.
The current blue-lidded wheelie bin for recycling materials is a standard 240 litre size, but the new larger bin, at 360 litres, offers 50% more capacity.

Cllr Steve Good, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We are responding to households that regularly have extra recycling and feel that their current bin is not big enough.

“In addition to making recycling easier for them, it will help boost our recycling rates even further, which is good news as West Oxfordshire is already one of the top districts in the country for recycling.”

West Oxfordshire’s recycling is collected fortnightly in the blue-lidded bin and glass is collected separately in a black box. However, food waste is collected weekly.

Recycling materials collected in the blue-lidded wheelie bins are cardboard, paper, foil, cartons, aerosols, food tins, drink cans, plastic bottles, tubs and trays.

To order a bigger recycling bin or any additional recycling container, call 01993 861000 or email [email protected]

Pumpkin power

26/10/2018

Once Halloween is over, West Oxfordshire residents can recycle their unwanted pumpkins as part of their weekly food waste collection service.
Pumpkins can either be left alongside waste and recycling bins on collection day, or cut into pieces and placed inside the food bin.

Steve Good, Cabinet Member for Environment said, “Although carving pumpkins is part of the fun of Halloween, a scary fact is that a quarter of those bought end up in the waste bin. We want to avoid this and so are reminding everyone that pumpkins can be collected alongside their food waste bins. They are then taken, along with other food waste, to the local processing plant near Cassington to be recycled into electricity and fertiliser.”

Carved pumpkins that are still edible can be used for cooking - see the Love Food, Hate waste website (www.lovefoodhatewaste.com) for recipe ideas.

For more information about waste and recycling in West Oxfordshire, or to order a free food waste bin and kitchen caddy, see www.westoxon.gov.uk/bins or call 01993 861000.
