Oxfordshire County Council - overall Budget Cuts Consultation - "Talking Oxfordshire"

26/10/2015

Oxfordshire County Council is  running a public consultation on its proposals to cut a further £50 million per year from the county council budget for each year from 2016/17 and 2019/20 - on top of the £292 million per year that it has already saved, or has plans to save, between 2010/11 and 2017/18.

Some county council services will be reduced and some may stop altogether. The services left will be targeted at those who really depend on them – particularly children at risk of abuse and neglect, and adults who cannot look after themselves.

The County Council is asking people to give their views on 95 savings options across 6 broad service areas - Adult Social Care; Children, Education and Families; Corporate Services; Environment and Economy; Fire and Rescue and Trading Standards; and Libraries and Cultural Services.

The County Council is also seeking residents' views on the possibility of raising its share of the council tax to reduce the volume of cuts required.

The consultation closes at 9am on 30 November 2015.

Oxfordshire County Council Consultation - Children's Centres

26/10/2015

Oxfordshire County Council is  running a public consultation on its proposals to reduce the number of children and young people's centres across the county.

This consultation is open and will run until 10 January 2016.

The County Council is proposing to remodel the way it delivers children's services in Oxfordshire in order to save £8 million (over 50%) from the current budget.

The County is proposing to reduce the current total of 44 Children's Centres and 7 Early Intervention Hubs to only 8 Children and Family Centres, to be located in the neediest areas of Oxfordshire (Abingdon, Banbury, Bicester, Didcot, Oxford City (3). and Witney).

The County Council will either substantially reduce or no longer provide universal services (such as Stay and Play Sessions, or Youth Open Access Activities).   Services are likely to be restricted to children in need (as defined by the Children Act 1989), children on child protection plans and those identified as vulnerable through the Thriving Families programme.

The County Council is hoping that community groups will mobilise themselves to take over some of the services currently provided by the Children's Centres which are under threat on a voluntary basis, in much the same way that many smaller libraries were "taken on" by their communities several years ago.
